Maintaining your workout gloves: washing and drying process

How to Wash Workout gloves and Wrist Wraps

Weight lifting gloves certainly help to prevent forming of blisters and calluses, however, it could become a nice warm and cozy place for various bacteria and other germs and can spread from there. Being a public place, where people get exposed with their bare body, a gym is an ideal place for those disease creating germs. And when you expose yourself there, everything from your costume to your workout gloves , get exposed to all those germs as well. Your gloves are more prone to be infected because if you have sweaty hands, that sweat gets trapped inside of your gloves and keep the gloves wet for a long time as the inside part of your gloves does not get exposed to air to be dried. Hence, no matter if it’s dirty or not, you should wash your gloves on a regular basis. Otherwise, it can get infected with germs which will ultimately spread to your body and to others around you. Obviously washing gloves every day is not a viable option, therefore you should use more than one pair of gloves to be safe from those bacteria fungus.

Different ways to Wash your Weight Lifting Gloves

Washing machine wash

Before putting your favorite gloves inside a washing machine, read the label for manufacturer’s advice. Specifically, if you’re using leather gloves that cannot be submerged in a washing machine. So, read the label and follow the instruction there – if the manufacturer mentioned it’s safe for machine wash, then you can proceed. Otherwise, machine washing the gloves which are not meant to be machine-washed can ruin those expensive ones.

  1. Secure the wrist straps at first, do not put those in the machine with loosen straps.
  2. Select the “gentle” mode of washing in your machine after you put the gloves inside.
  3. Once the washing is done, you should let them air-dry – and preferably put them inside, not outside under the sun.

Hand wash

Some gym gloves are not machine-safe and manufacturer mention that clearly on the label – you should hand wash them carefully. The steps which are given below – are easy to be followed.

  1. First, start with filling a bucket or sink with lukewarm water.
  2. Use any non-bleach soap, preferably liquid instead of powder,
  3. Now put the glove in the bucket/sink and keep them there for a few minutes.
  4. Now rub the outside of the glove gently with your hand – do not use any scrubber.
  5. Make sure to run the soapy water through every opening of the fingers
  6. Now, turn the glove inside out – and repeat from 1 to 5.
  7. Check if the glove is thoroughly cleaned
  8. If the glove is sufficiently cleaned, then put it in a bucket of clean lukewarm water.
  9. Rinse the glove thoroughly and make sure there’s no soapy residue at any crease
  10. Now, let it dry inside. Do not hang it outside under the sun. The heat from the sun can cause the damage to the fabric of your expensive gloves. For the same reason, never use a dryer to dry your gloves. During winter time, use a fan to dry the gloves inside.
